Know Juan 2

John Ray is a Filipino art student living in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. Although mostly spending three-quarters of his life in the summer capital Baguio City, he moved to Manila to study fine arts. He is pursuing a degree in Fine Arts and Design, majoring in Advertising Arts in the University of Santo Tomas.

At a young age, he began to appreciate animation through reruns of cartoons on Cartoon Network. Years later, he would discover the multi-faceted world of Japanese animation. Super robots, magical fantasies, samurai swords and ninja trickery would become a staple in his menu of TV entertainment.

A turning point in his life came when he bought the second issue of Culture Crash Comics, a Filipino-made manga-inspired comics magazine. From then on, he decided to become a comic book artist. Drawing at the back of his notebooks was a usual hobby, something he shared with some of his closest friends. He spent late nights devouring manga and watching anime off the internet. He considers himself a fan of Katsuhiro Otomo, Masashi Kishimoto, Naoki Urusawa and Eiichiro Oda.

Not satisfied with his artistic direction and the lack of fine art courses in his hometown, studying in Manila was the only answer for his hunger to learn more. Honing his skills in illustration and design, he dreams of one day seeing his work get published.

He has recently begun reading American comics, opening himself to not only great illustration but also sensational writing. He eyes on the writing of Alan Moore, Jim Krueger, Mark Millar and Brian Bendis. His favourite artists include Alex Niño, Alfredo Alcala, Leinil Yu, Frank Miller, Dave Gibbons and Will Eisner.
